Coal industry of the United Republic of Tanzania. Part 2.Review.
General characteristics of the coal industry in Tanzania
- Potential and Reserves: Tanzania has the largest coal reserves in East Africa—approximately 1.5 billion tonnes. The main deposits are located in the southwest of the country in the Ruhuhu, Mchuhuma, Ngaka, and Kivira basins.
- Primary Mining Method: Opencast mining is used, as the coal seams lie close to the surface.
- Coal Type: The country primarily produces bituminous coal (high-quality thermal coal), which can be used in both the energy sector and industrial applications, such as cement and steel production.
- Domestic Market: Almost all of the coal mined in Tanzania (94%) is consumed domestically, as the industry is focused on supporting its growing economy.
